What trends will we be seeing in 2015? Tribal prints, Pop Art colors, elaborate side braids? What was trending in the Paleolithic Era? Hunting, gathering, survival. Early depictions of life have been found in the form of petroglyphs, rock engravings and cave paintings. Studying cave paintings can be great way to introduce art history to young children. I like to think of art as another language that can be used to tell a story. What might our ancestors tell us through their symbolic representations? Art has been essential for communicating feelings, beauty and things imagined. In researching cave art we found it could communicate fear, danger or the unknown.
After looking at examples of Lascaux Cave Paintings, we used crumpled recycled grocery bags as the canvas for our "cave walls". Minimal detail, an earthy palette and simple subjects gave these a primitive quality. Experiment with conte crayons, paint, chalk and charcoal. Students also brainstormed about other art materials that you might find in nature: mud, red clay, brick, stones, sticks. Try other surfaces like cardboard or sandpaper to get different effects.
